Industrial Landscape & Soil Mechanics in Thailand

Understanding the engineering demands of high-humidity and soft clay terrains.

1. The Soft Soil Challenge: Bangkok Clay & Floodplains

Thailand's central plain, particularly the metropolitan areas surrounding Bangkok, consists of a thick layer of marine soft clay known academically as "Bangkok Clay." This geological formation features low shear strength and high compressibility. Civil projects such as highways, railways, and industrial foundations built on this terrain face extreme challenges regarding ground settlement and load-bearing capacity.

As a leading supplier, we engineered specialized high-strength woven geotextiles and PET needle-punched non-woven geotextiles. These materials provide exceptional reinforcement and filtration parameters, facilitating rapid pore water dissipation while containing lateral soil movement. This stabilizes base soils during infrastructure development across the Chao Phraya River basin.

2. The Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) & Industrialization

The Eastern Economic Corridor development plan in Chonburi, Rayong, and Chachoengsao represents Thailand's industrial future. The construction of massive deep-sea ports, high-speed rail lines, and petrochemical plants requires high-durability geosynthetics. Our ISO-certified production lines supply the EEC with heavy-duty geogrids, geocells, and geomembranes designed to withstand harsh coastal environments, acidic soils, and heavy cyclic industrial loads.

By preventing subgrade contamination and enhancing slope stability on mountainous road linkages, our geosynthetics ensure the long-term structural integrity of key corridors throughout Southeast Asia.

Technical Insight: For high-humidity tropical environments like Thailand, UV stabilization and biological resistance are critical. Our polyester (PET) and polypropylene (PP) geotextiles are formulated with premium carbon black and stabilizers to prevent degradation caused by intense tropical sunlight and soil microbes, maintaining design tensile strength for over 50 years.

Global Geosynthetic Industry Trends & Technology Roadmap

Pioneering smart materials, carbon footprint reduction, and high-performance polymers.

The global geosynthetics market is undergoing a rapid transition toward ecological sustainability and smart engineering. The integration of recycled polymer formulations and the optimization of carbon-neutral manufacturing processes have become industry benchmarks. Our Geotextile Production Process

Uncompromising precision at every manufacturing stage for maximum field performance.

Geotextile is widely used in civil engineering materials, with filtration, isolation, reinforcement, protection and other functions. Its production process includes raw material preparation, melt extrusion, mesh rolling, draft curing, winding packaging and inspection steps. It requires processing and control across multiple stages, while also considering environmental protection and durability. Modern production equipment and technology are widely used at our facility, significantly improving the production efficiency and quality of our geotextiles.

  • 1. Raw Material Preparation: The main raw materials of geotextile are polyester chips, polypropylene filament and viscose fiber. These raw materials need to be inspected, arranged and stored to ensure their quality and stability.
  • 2. Melt Extrusion: After the polyester slice is melted at high temperatures, it is extruded into a molten state by a screw extruder, and polypropylene filament and viscose fiber are added for mixing. In this process, the temperature, pressure and other parameters need to be precisely controlled to ensure the uniformity and stability of the melting state.
  • 3. Roll the Net: After mixing, the melt is sprayed through the spinneret to form a fibrous substance and form a uniform network structure on the conveyor belt. At this time, it is necessary to control the thickness, uniformity and fiber orientation of the mesh to ensure the physical properties and stability of the geotextile.
  • 4. Draft Curing: After laying the net into rolls, it is necessary to carry out draft curing treatment. In this process, the temperature, speed and draft ratio need to be precisely controlled to ensure the strength and stability of the geotextile.
  • 5. Roll and Pack: The geotextile after draft curing needs to be rolled up and packed for subsequent construction. In this process, the length, width and thickness of the geotextile need to be measured to ensure that it meets the design requirements.
  • 6. Quality Inspection: At the end of each production link, the quality of geotextile needs to be inspected. The inspection contents include physical property test, chemical property test and appearance quality test. Only geotextiles that meet the quality requirements can be used in the market.

Geomembrane & Geosynthetics Application Technology

Technical selection, installation guidelines, and systematic maintenance protocols.

Geomembrane is a kind of material widely used in engineering projects, which has the functions of seepage prevention, isolation and reinforcement. Understanding correct application technology—including selection, laying, and maintenance—is crucial to achieving the desired design lifespan.

1. Selecting the Right Geomembrane

It is very important to choose the suitable geomembrane. Key selection parameters include:

  • Material Properties: Choose between High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) for extreme chemical resistance and tensile strength, or Linear Low-Density Polyethylene (LLDPE) for exceptional flexibility and elongation, which is ideal for uneven subgrade settlement.
  • Thickness: Typically ranges from 0.3mm to 2.0mm. Subgrade protection and water channels generally use 0.5mm to 1.0mm, while municipal landfill and hazardous waste barriers require thicknesses exceeding 1.5mm.
  • Impermeability: Testing must ensure ultra-low hydraulic conductivity (typically < 1×10-12 cm/s) to isolate fluids effectively.
Geomembrane Field Application

2. Precision Laying and Seaming

Installing geomembranes requires specialized equipment and methods:

  • Land Preparation: The subgrade must be compacted and cleaned, completely free of sharp stones, roots, or debris that could puncture the liner. A protective non-woven geotextile cushion is highly recommended.
  • Laying Protocol: Deploy panels with minimal pulling. Allow sufficient slack (approx. 2-4%) to accommodate thermal expansion and contraction cycles under fluctuating tropical temperatures.
  • Joint Treatment (Welding): Use dual-track hot wedge welding for main seams and extrusion welding for detailings and patches. All seams must undergo non-destructive testing (air pressure or spark testing).

3. Lifecycle Maintenance and Protection

Maintaining geomembranes extends operational life:

  • Cleaning and Inspection: Regularly clean silt accumulation and check exposed sections for physical damage or weathering.
  • Prevent Puncture: Implement localized soil or concrete ballast layers to shield the membrane from UV exposure and mechanical impacts.

Summary: Selecting the correct material, applying proper field welding techniques, and conducting regular quality control checks are essential to prevent leaks and structural failures in environmental lining projects.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Technical answers regarding sourcing, specifications, and installation for the Thailand market.

Which type of geotextile is best for Bangkok's soft clay soils?

For soft clay consolidation in Thailand (such as Bangkok Clay), high-strength non-woven polyester (PET) geotextiles are typically recommended. They provide high permeability to relieve pore water pressure while offering filtration that prevents fine soil particles from clogging drainage channels. For heavy load-bearing foundations, woven geotextiles or warp-knitted composite geotextiles are preferred due to their high tensile strength and lower elongation under stress.

How do tropical climates affect the lifetime of geosynthetics?

Tropical environments feature high UV exposure, elevated temperatures, and microbial activity. Shandong Hongyue incorporates high-performance UV stabilizers and carbon black additives into all polymers. This prevents thermal-oxidative degradation and UV weathering, ensuring our geosynthetics maintain their design properties in humid, tropical climates.

Do your products comply with Thailand's Department of Highways (DOH) specifications?

Yes, our products meet and exceed ASTM, ISO, and CE specifications, which align with the standards required by the Thailand Department of Highways (DOH) and the Department of Rural Roads (DRR). We provide complete test certificates (MTRs) from third-party certified testing bodies for every batch.

What is the typical lead time for shipping to ports in Thailand?

Due to our strategically located production base in Dezhou, Shandong Province, and proximity to major Chinese ports like Qingdao, shipments to Thailand (such as Laem Chabang or Bangkok Port) generally take 10 to 15 days of ocean transit time. Combined with order processing and customs clearance, the total delivery window is highly competitive.

How do you verify welding seam integrity for geomembranes on site?

We support two main testing methods: non-destructive air-pressure testing for double-track hot wedge seams (using a test needle to pressurize the central channel) and spark testing or vacuum testing for single-track extrusion welds. Destructive shear and peel testing are also conducted on sample cuts in the field to verify weld strength.
